Overglaze painting, also known as china or porcelain painting or onglaze painting is a very old but little known art form. The paints, which are mainly metal oxides come in powder form; these are ground with a medium then applied to the china. The painting is built up from light to dark rather like watercolour. It is then kiln fired to a temperature around 800 centigrade where the glaze melts and the pigment becomes permanently bound to the glaze. The painting is gradually built up over several fires.
